In anticipation of the February 2012 presidential elections, President Abdoulaye Wade proposed constitutional reforms that would have reduced by half the required threshold to win a first round presidential election and would have created a vice presidential post. These reforms were dropped in June following widespread protests. In July, President Wade announced his plans to run for a third term, the legality of which would be determined by the Constitutional Council.

In October 2011, Senegal and Belgium signed an air traffic agreement to end a bilateral dispute over access to commercial airline routes.
